EAPs are strategic programs that are designed to enhance team and individual performance and well being in the workplace. They include a mechanism for providing counselling and other forms of assistance, advice and information to employees on a systematic and uniform basis, and to recognised standards.
Mechanisms that are designed to improve staff retention also include workshops, training, coaching and other services including mini-seminars or 'lunch box' information sessions for employees.
LGBTI populations experience unique underlying psychological issues including invisible stigma and internalized homophobia. These put them at higher risk and leads to statistically much higher levels of psychological disorders.
If personal issues are not appropriately dealt with, this can lead to reduced performance, increase in WorkCover stress claims, absenteeism and employees leaving. Not being able to access appropriate counselling can result in feelings of not being adequately valued by the organization, and damage can also be done to the organization’s reputation as not being an employer of choice for LGBTI people.
Research demonstrates that a majority of LGBTI people feel more comfortable going to either an LGBTI specialist counselling service, and some prefer a gay or lesbian psychologist. According to many of our LGBTI clients they don’t access their organization’s contracted mainstream EAP provider and choose to see us privately.
Organizations we work with recognize that there is a need for their LGBTI employees to appropriate specialized counselling services.
